Brahman (BRAH mun)

a single spiritual power that Hindus believe lives in everything; is considered to be the "creator."

Avatar (AV uh tahr)

a representation of a Hindu god or goddess in human or animal form.

Reincarnation

the rebirth of the soul in the body of another living being.

Dharma (DAHR muh)

the religious and moral duties of Hindus.

Ahimsa (uh HIM sah)

the Hindu idea of non-violence.

Vishnu

important Hindu god; is considered to be the "preserver." Kindly god who is concerned with the welfare of human beings.

Shiva

important Hindu god; is considered to be the "destroyer." He is powerful and is not concerned with human matters.

Ganges

Sacred river in India.

Shakti

wife of Shiva; she is both a creator and destroyer...both kind and cruel.

Upanishads
(oo PAN uh shadz)

a religious Hindu text that means "sitting near a teacher." It is written in a question/answer form.

Yoga

a physical activity; system of special exercises and breathing.
